Eliquis® offers a short 7-day treatment initiation period and a lower dose for extended therapy 1
- The recommended dose of apixaban for the treatment of acute DVT and treatment of PE is 10mg taken orally twice daily for the first 7 days followed by 5mg taken orally twice daily. As per available medical guidelines, short duration of treatment (at least 3 months) should be based on transient risk factors (e.g., recent surgery, trauma, immobilisation).1
- The recommended dose of apixaban for the prevention of recurrent DVT and PE is 2.5mg taken orally twice daily. When prevention of recurrent DVT and PE is indicated, the 2.5mg twice daily dose should be initiated following completion of 6 months of treatment with apixaban 5mg twice daily.1
Study design
AMPLIFY: In the study a total of 5,395 patients were randomised to treatment with apixaban 10 mg twice daily orally for 7 days followed by apixaban 5 mg twice daily orally for 6 months, or enoxaparin 1 mg/kg twice daily subcutaneously for at least 5 days (until INR≥ 2) and warfarin (target INR range 2.0-3.0) orally for 6 months. The mean age was 56.9 years and 89.8% of randomised patients had unprovoked Venous Thromboembolism events.3
AMPLIFY-EXT: In the study a total of 2,482 patients were randomised to treatment with apixaban 2.5 mg twice daily orally, apixaban 5 mg twice daily orally, or placebo for 12 months after completing 6 to 12 months of initial anticoagulant treatment.2
